Out-of-Town Trips

What is a Vortex? In Sedona it represents a “swirling center of energy that is conducive to healing, meditation and self exploration. A place where the earth seems especially alive with energy. Where people may feel inspired recharged and uplifted.”

While most of us were not found doing yoga at sunrise, or meditating before our crystals, we did experience the charm and scenic beauty of  the surrounding Arizona environs.

This was our bike destination for 2019. Previous years have been Steamboat Springs, Moab, Solvang CA, and Aspen. VICC organizes a destination bike trip yearly, for members who are interested in a getaway bike vacation. It encompasses a long weekend from Thurs night to Monday morning, with a selection of rides and the camaraderie of fellow VICC members.

Members arrived via flights or commute to the Sedona area in mid-September. Those choosing to fly had the comfort in knowing their bikes were in the capable hands of Doug and Sue, transported by the infamous IRMA, our club trailer.

Riders were offered a variety of ride options. They included a climbing ride to Mingus mountain, 28 miles and 4300 feet, with a scenic stop in the repurposed historic mining town of Jerome for an espresso refresher, or the 26 mi tour de Village of Oak Creek.

A 39 mile loop ride (2600 ft climb) thru Red Rock country, desert, and riparian vista‘s, with a stop for charcuterie at the idyllic stream side winery oasis of Page Springs Cellars.

The 45 mile Mary Lake ride thru pine scented forest and lake views to the rustic Mormon lake lodge. And finally, the Monday AM 16 mile Aerie Overlook for a grand finale overview of the Verde Valley, tarantulas and all.

2019

Maximum mileage was 128 miles with 9900 ft of climbing. This is after all a Bike Trip.

Each day culminated with an evening meal at a local restaurant, and camaraderie with the 15 members who attended this year’s annual trip. An evening night cap for those with a hollow leg was a stop at the Rocky Road ice cream shop to replenish glycogen stores for the next day’s ride.

2019

Las Posadas of Sedona was our base camp. A boutique hotel with an option for suites or villas. Quaint and small, and it had the required pool for relaxing our bodies after the days ride. The hotel offered a bountiful morning breakfast to get our members ready for the day. Prepared by the ever accommodating  “chef Eloy “, who willingly came in early to prepare a selection of Hispanic inspired fare to enable us to start our rides before the southwestern heat could take its toll.

While we didn’t have morning yoga sessions, I do believe our group was enveloped by the vortex power, and we were provided the energy and inspiration to have a great biking vacation. Thanks to all of the attendees who came to share in this unique event. We hope to see you, and other members for next year’s outing.
